Kings XI bowl; Yuvraj out, Gayle in

Kings XI Punjab's Ankit Rajpoot became the first uncapped player to take five wickets (5/14) in an IPL match, but his team still lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in a low-scoring game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Thursday.

The Punjab bowlers made life miserable for the Hyderabad batsmen, and as if to make up for being uncaring visitors, their fielders tried to mollify the damage as best as they could.

That was while chasing Hyderabad's 132-6, which owed some to Punjab's poor fielding.

Sunrisers' top-order failed to cope up with Rajpoot's extra bounce and swing, which resulted in the dismissal of captain Kane Williamson on the fourth ball of the innings, caught by skipper Ravichandran Ashwin. "A fantastic second half for us, but we are still to put a collective performance together", Williamson had added.

"Everyone practices and everyone works hard before the games and it's not an easy job".

With the target gradually getting out of Punjab's hands, tailenders Mujeeb Ur Rahman (10 not out) and Ankit Rajpoot (8) got a few hits before Thampi uprooted Rajpoot's middle stick to take his team home.

Rajpoot's extra bounce and swing first induced an edge from Dhawan which Nair gleefully accepted in the only slip and then in his next over the pacer removed Saha caught by Tye as the batsman went for a awful cross-batted slog. Barinder Sran (3-27-0) then dismissed Shakib al Hasan on a short delivery outside the off stump that flew off the edge and was caught at third man.

Rajpoot had nearly jolted the hosts with the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan (28 off 29 balls; 4×3) on the very next ball only if Andrew Tye hadn't missed a dolly at mid-wicket. In 19.4 Rajpoot to Pandey dismissed with the flawless yorker. In 19.6 Rajpoot to Mohammad Nabi dismissed five-for, that's his career-best figures, and the best this season as well.

"I think it was my day today that I got 5 wickets", Rajpoot said after the match. Sandeep then returned to dismiss struggling Manoj Tiwary (1) and Tye in a space of three balls.

However, once both openers fell in quick succession, the Kings XI batsmen looked all at sea in the face of incessant pressure from the strong Sunrisers bowling attack. The pick of the bowlers however was the young Rashid Khan who picked up three wickets with an economy rate of just 4.75.

But in the same match with DD, Punjab's bowling came into their own.

Overall, it will be Punjab's batting versus Hyderabad's bowling when the two sides square-off on Thursday. In 2018, he has so far played only three matches for KXIP and it was in his third match that he really showcased his exceptional talent.
