What you need to know about National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Lynette PayneApr 28, 2018

Police departments across the Kansas City metro will collect peoples' old and unused prescription medications.

Anyone who is unable to participate on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day can anonymously surrender their prescription drugs at any MSP post, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m.to 4 p.m., excluding holidays.

Turning in expired, unused or unwanted medications rather than flushing them down a toilet or tossing them into trash will keep them out of the water supply.

United States Attorney Deegan stated, "Our country is in the midst of an opioid and prescription drug abuse epidemic".

Take back day is part of the ongoing effort to address the opioid crisis in America.

"Through my experience of drug addiction, and the hardships of my life, this (initiative) is near and dear to my heart", he said.

A list of drop-off sites for take-back day, available at takebackday.dea.gov, includes police departments in Alstead, Dublin, Fitzwilliam, Hinsdale, Jaffrey, Keene, Peterborough, Rindge, Troy and Winchester, along with the Walpole Recycling Center. "Studies show that over half of abused prescription drugs are obtained - often unknowingly - from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet". National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a program where anyone can drop off unwanted medications without questions asked. They include, in Kootenai County, the Coeur d'Alene Police and Kootenai County Sheriff's offices. "The Drug Take-Back Box is strictly for pill forms of medication".

The service is free and open to the public. The DEA can not accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches.

Organized nationally, by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and locally, by the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH), the twice-a-year event has resulted in 76,474 pounds of medication being collected in 15 events since 2010.
