Trump blew up at homeland security chief over border security

According to The New York Times, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen nearly resigned Wednesday after a heated argument in which Trump allegedly berated her during a Cabinet meeting focused on immigration.

Still, Nielsen drafted a resignation letter earlier this week but did not submit it, according to a source.

Trump reportedly railed against Nielsen on Wednesday, saying that she failed to adequately secure the United States border, former officials with knowledge of the incident said to The Times.

When White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about the meeting, she responded simply, "the president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders".

Nielsen said in a statement that Trump "is rightly frustrated" on border security issues. He also went off on other cabinet officials who missed his expectations on stemming the flow of undocumented immigrants in the USA, one source who attended the meeting said.

The tongue-lashing, over Trump's belief his homeland chief wasn't doing enough to halt illegal immigration, went on so long Nielsen reportedly prepared a resignation letter.

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton. The Times report claimed that she was "miserable" in her job according to a "person close to Ms. Nielsen".

Trump's anger about immigration has grown in recent weeks, according to several officials.

1 person in the assembly said Trump railed in the whole Cabinet on what he said was deficiency of advancement keeping out illegal immigrants, " the occasions said. But Nielsen stood her ground, citing the law in certain instances, the source said. It was only a portion of a larger tirade in which he chided the cabinet for what he felt was an unsatisfactory level of progress in stopping illegal immigration and ensuring border security.

"All these are complicated matters and I will keep on to guide the Department to accomplish everything that we are able to in order to implement the President's security-focused schedule", she added, without saying anything regarding resignation programs.

Trump has clashed with Nielsen for weeks.

Trump has also been frustrated with Congress's refusal to fully fund his promised border wall along the nation's southern border, and some in the administration had accused DHS leaders of slow-walking more aggressive efforts to separate children from their parents at the border.
