Corruption allegations: Travel ban imposed on former Malaysian PM Najib Razak

But as one prediction ends, another begins thanks to DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang who said Malaysia will see a new succession of prime ministers with the "Mahathir" prophecy.

New Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said he thought he could recover most funds from 1MDB and that Najib will pay the consequences if the law finds any wrongdoing.

But, moments later, the immigration department said on its official Facebook page that Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, were blacklisted from leaving Malaysia.

Tweeting from her handle Sumisha [email protected], she said: "JUST IN: Former PM Najib Razak expected to announce he's stepping down as UMNO president today". Confirming the reports on Saturday, Mahathir said that he prevented Najib from leaving the country.

Speaking to Malaysian media, sources close to Najib had dismissed claims he was fleeing, saying he just wanted to go on a break after a grueling election campaign.

Earlier, as dozens of people descended on the airport in a bid to stop Najib and Rosmah leaving, riot police were stationed by the gate of the airport where it was believed Najib would enter.

At his first press conference after the ceremony, Mahathir reassured the financial community that he would prioritize stabilizing the economy and return billions of dollars lost in a graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

As a white van with heavily tinted windows attempted to pass, the crowd surrounded the vehicle and demanded to know who was inside. We have suffered for so many years.

"The government are anxious they could be sensitive and important, and could be taken out of the country".

Filings by the US Justice Department in a civil lawsuit indicated almost $30 million of the money stolen was used to buy jewelry for Rosmah, including a rare 22-carat pink diamond set in a necklace.

He denied any wrongdoing and was cleared by Malaysia's attorney-general, even as U.S. authorities alleged that over $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund in a fraud orchestrated by a financier known to be close to Najib and his family.

Najib has said the deposit was a donation by an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family which had been largely returned.

Dr Mahathir has said he will eventually stand aside to allow Mr Anwar to take over the running of the country.

Later yesterday, Najib - who has been under growing pressure from inside his Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition since the landslide loss - announced he was quitting as head of BN as well as its main party. Anwar, a former deputy prime minister in the ruling party, was also imprisoned under Mahathir following a power struggle.
