Iran anger at Israeli strikes on Syria

The President said: "Iran has always tried to de-escalate tensions" in the Middle East.

It could spread across Syria and Lebanon. "The moment they are getting closer to the border and using missiles, this is something the Israeli government will never accept", said Ben-Onn.

Iran has advisers and experts and has backed tens of thousands of militiamen who are fighting alongside Assad's forces in the civil war.

It is a conflict that needs to be averted and the time to do it is now. Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu is known to be a huge critic of Iran and supports Donald Trump in pulling out of the Iran deal. So that rather than deterring the Iranians from becoming more active in the region, they probably have more of an incentive to demonstrate that right now they're going to show the United States that there's a outcome to what they've done.

"The silence of other countries and of global organizations on such aggressive moves by the Zionist regime is the equivalent of giving a green light and encouraging it to continue with its aggressive initiatives", Qasemi said.

In February, Israel shot down what it said was an armed Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace.

As the US coalition focused squarely on eliminating what's left of ISIS - while letting other anti-American entities metastasize - the balance of power has shifted towards the Iranian axis, allowing for the Tehran regime and its proxies to usurp territory and influence.

The Israeli army on Friday published photographs and maps of what it said were the "Iranian targets" it attacked earlier this week in Syria.

"Thanks to the proper preparation of our forces, both offensively and defensively, the Iranian operation failed", Netanyahu noted, referring the Fajr-5 missile salvo launched at the Golan Heights by the Quds Force of the Tehran regime's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Four of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome antimissile defense system, and the rest fell short of the Israeli-controlled territory, the military said.

Israel says it destroyed the launcher from which these were fired.

Israel's military later confirmed it had carried out the raids, saying some 70 military and intelligence targets had been struck and all of its aircraft had returned safely.

Thousands of Iranians protested Friday across the country.

In the short-term, there is grounds to hope that this will not escalate into an all-out war.

The targets were Israeli military positions - not civilian areas.

For the new authorities in Tehran, Israel becomes an "occupier" of Jerusalem and responsible for the "genocide" of Palestinians. But equally, its spokesmen are insisting that they do not want a wider conflict. No one on the Israeli side was reported to have been injured.

The stakes here are huge. It was not immediately clear if any Iranians were among the dead. "This is unlikely to happen because Israel knows Russian Federation defines the rules in Syria", said Lukyanov.

Israel has drawn its red lines and it is clearly not going to back down either.

Washington's influence in the region is waning.

"We will not allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria no matter the price to pay", Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman says in April. He said Moscow warned Israel to avoid "all actions that could be seen as provocative".

It is a gloomy picture.

A showdown had seemed inevitable between the two Middle East powers.
