Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive happening Saturday

As letter carriers, Richard Hatzenbuhler says they see the need to fill hungry bellies almost every day while on the job. The drive helps restock food bank shelves after the holiday season. Monetary donations can also be made online at feedinghope.org or by calling 405-600-3136.

Saturday, May 12, is the Stamp Out Hunger food drive across the U.S.

Last year, the food drive collected more than 75 million pounds of groceries, enough to provide 30 million meals, nationwide.

The post service doesn't discourage anyone from donating non-perishable food directly by bringing it to their local post office on Saturday, Ramirez said.

"And today is the date that they are to set them out at their mailbox and we'll pick them up", city letter carrier Curtis Lewis said. As the demand for food assistance continues to rise, the Regional Food Bank depends upon the generosity of the community to support its mission of "Fighting Hunger..." That was the third-highest amount since the food drive began in 1993. This particular food drive usually doesn't produce a lot of bulk items.

At the end of the day they counted a preliminary total of 69,000 pounds of food, but it's not too late to get involved. 16 million are children, according to ACCESS.

Regardless of the turn out, Near said the extra work is well worth it if it helps them stamp out hunger.

Frozen foods, homemade foods or home-canned food items should not be donated. "We sort through it, make sure the sell by dates are all good then we group food by can goods, dry goods and other things".
