Ta'ang National Liberation Army clashes with Myanmar's military near China border

Howard TerryMay 13, 2018

Clashes in Northern Myanmar near the border with China have increased since January, as the worldwide community pays more attention to the Rohingya refugee crisis in the West.

U Zaw Htay wrote on his facebook: "The fact that the TNLA has to carry out minor military operation as they have to suffer losses in attacks in the forest is unacceptable Attacks on civilian targets would not amount to demanding ethnic rights".

Video on social media showed smoke rising above Muse's prominent trading center.

"Nineteen (people) were killed in fighting", the Myanmar military source said, adding that two dozen had been wounded.

Nan Mwe Phown, a Red Cross member who was at a hospital in Muse, said the dead included 15 civilians, including a pregnant woman, as well as several police officers. About 32 people, including 27 civilians, three policemen, and two local paramilitary troopers were injured in the attack.

TNLA spokesman Major Mai Aik Kyaw told AFP that they attacked joint military and militia posts and a casino just outside the Shan State town of Muse and on a road to Lashio.

TNLA forces reportedly attacked a casino run by a militia and a Myanmar army post. "This is a terrorist attack".

The group, one of several in Myanmar's frontier areas that have long battled government forces, said in a statement that it was retaliating for a push by Myanmar's military against another ethnic insurgent group, the Kachin Independence Army.

It is unclear if members of the powerful KIA took part in the attacks yesterday. It says that the insurgents are based in Shan and the neighboring state of Kachin, and are demanding greater autonomy.

Myanmar's army has been criticised for extrajudicial killings, torture, forced labour, rape and other abuses against the country's many minority groups.
