Trump thanks North Korea for vow to dismantle nuclear site

The statement, reported by the South China Morning Post, comes a couple days after President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a summit on June 12.

On Saturday, the North Korean state media reported that the ruling party chose to dismantle its only known nuclear test site Punggye-ri on May 23-25.

North Korea's key ally, China, said Friday it welcomes the progress made by the US and North Korea in setting up next month's summit between their leaders.

Journalists from other countries, including the United States and South Korea, will be invited to cover the event.

However, observers noted that there has been no mention of foreign experts being allowed access to the site.

Earlier this month, North Korea announced the closure of its nuclear testing site, saying it's suspending all nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests. Guards and researchers will be withdrawn, and the area surrounding the test site will be closed. Trump said in a Twitter posting.

The demolition viewing party is now scheduled less than three weeks before the June 12 summit in Singapore between Kim, Moon, and President Trump.

The spokesman said it was an expression of North Korea's willingness, not with a word but with an act, to keep on promise that Pyongyang made during the inter-Korean summit.

Kim has declared the development of the North's nuclear force complete and that it had no further need for the site.

Prior to the historic U.S.

North Korea's pledge no longer to carry out unannounced missile tests or other activities that put flights at risk may be seen as the latest sign that the isolated nation is prepared to engage with the world.

North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged transparency and laid out plans Saturday to dismantle the country's nuclear testing site.

But in September 2008, the North declared that it would resume reprocessing plutonium, complaining that Washington wasn't fulfilling its promise to remove the country from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Kim is expected to demand that the US pledge to accept the continuation of North Korea's hereditary regime in return for vowing to achieve denuclearization on the divided peninsula in a "phased" and "synchronized" manner.

Kim previous year oversaw a string of missile and nuclear tests, drawing the ire of the global community.

The North went on to conduct its second nuclear test in May 2009.
