At least 6 Afghans killed, 20 injured during Jalalabad gun battle, blasts

Multiple blasts hit the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad today (May 13) in a coordinated attack that killed six people and wounded dozens, police said.

Terrified employees flung themselves from windows to escape as security forces battled the attackers for more than four hours, before all eight assailants were killed, Khogyani said.

Qaderi said at least four attackers then stormed into the building with rocket-propelled-grenade launchers and AK-47 assault rifles.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The provincial governor's spokesman also added that the security forces managed to rescue at least forty two people, including civilians and government workers. The battle took place inside a building which houses the state accounts office.

Militants have staged several attacks across Afghanistan this year.

In January, gunmen attacked an office of aid group Save the Children in Jalalabad, killing at least five people and wounding 25. Witnesses said the explosions had caused carnage among passers-by.

On May 6, an explosion at a mosque in the eastern Afghan province of Khost killed at least 10 people and wounded 29.

But the Islamic State group has also stepped up attacks in recent months, particularly in Kabul.

Last year, USA stepped up its support to struggling Afghan forces, announcing plans for thousands of additional advisers and increasing air strikes in a bid to force the Taliban to enter peace negotiations.
