John Bolton: Trump Sanctions On European Companies "Possible" Over Iran

Howard TerryMay 14, 2018

National Security Adviser John Bolton speaks on a morning television show from the grounds of the White House, on May 9, 2018 in Washington, DC.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that withdrawing from the 2015 agreement wasn't aimed at Europeans, but he didn't rule out the USA imposing sanctions on entities that continue to do business with Iran, even as efforts continue to strike a new deal.

President Donald Trump's announcement last Tuesday that the USA was exiting the 2015 nuclear accord was met with widespread dismay in Europe where companies now face the threat of sanctions if they do business with Iran.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said it is possible the US will impose sanctions on European companies that do business with Iran.

"I've written and said a lot of things over the years when I was a complete free agent", Bolton said when pressed on the issue regime change in Iran on CNN's "State of the Union".

"The consequences of American sanctions go way beyond goods shipped by American companies because of our technology licenses to many other countries and businesses around the world". Bolton, former ambassador to United Nations who has always defended hard line, merely noted that "it is possible" and that "depends on conduct of or governments", a very ambiguous words that only serve to clarify that hand lasts also with Allies not Discarded.

Recall that the United States withdrawal from the agreement with Iran was an unpleasant surprise for the European allies of Washington, provoking instability in the oil market and strengthen the threat of war in the middle East.

Bolton did not rule out sanctions on European countries that do business with Iran. Bolton's comments confirmed that after that, Trump is willing to subject them to penalties.

As a private citizen, Bolton in the past has suggested that the United States push for a change in government in Iran. "He (Trump) makes the decisions and the advice I give him is between us".

"The imbecile Trump's pretexts and insane move following a psychological war and breach of contract and unilateral pullout from the [nuclear deal] and his idiotic remarks against the powerful Iran revealed again the imperialistic nature of the criminal American leaders", one group of protesters in Tehran said in a statement.

Changing the regime in Iran is "not the policy of the administration", Bolton said on ABC.

"I hope that in coming days or weeks we will achieve an agreement that really works, that it really protects world from Iranian misconduct, not only of its nuclear program, but also of its missiles and its malignant conduct", said secretary of State. "I think that will sink in; we'll see what happens then", Bolton said.
