Lenovo President Teases Plans For An All-Screen Phone

What remains to be seen is whether Lenovo can keep up to the buzz created with the Z5.

A sketch, teased by Lenovo, of its new flagship Lenovo Z5 smartphone, shows the device to feature a truly full edge-to-edge screen, without adhering to the infamous "top notch" trend. While the use of ultrasonic technology has helped manufacturers get rid of other sensors, the front facing camera can still be a challenge for companies pursuing all screen smartphone designs.

However, we've seen several prototypes that go even further; for example, Vivo's Apex concept phone has a staggering 98% screen-to-body ratio. The teaser shows the sketch of a phone that is almost all screen.

At least, according to a sketch shared by Lenovo VP Chang Cheng on Weibo, a Twitter-like platform. For context, the iPhone X has an 82.9% screen-to-body ratio, and the Essential PH-1 has an 84.9% screen-to-body ratio. That is also making us yearn more for the rest of the device to be shown. Unfortunately, we are going to have to await the details, especially around how Lenovo will manage a supposed front-facing camera. Then we have OnePlus who will have the regular notch to fit the hardware but will give the user the option to imitate top bezel by displaying a black bar so it will look like a device with a slim top bezel. He wrote that "Lenovo Z5 will have a screen ratio of 95 percent, it will include four technological breakthroughs and 18 patented technologies".

The Lenovo Z5 will arrive sometime in June and since it does not appear to have a facial recognition sensor other than the one that will be incorporated via software, it will probably have a fingerprint scanner for user authentication.
