Margot Kidder Dies at 69 Years Old

Irene MckinneyMay 15, 2018

Margot Kidder, perhaps the most beloved actress to inhabit the role, died in her sleep Sunday at age 69.

Kidder's manager, Camilla Fluxman Pines, and the Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston, MT, confirmed the Superman actress' death, but no cause of death was revealed. Soon after, she was diagnosed with manic depression, a disorder now more commonly known as bipolar disorder. Police, who found no indication of drug use, took her to the psychiatric ward of the county's Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar.

In this way, she turned that dark chapter into something positive.

Lois's first meeting with her becaped intended, caught in mid-air after falling from a helicopter is one of the great introductions in cinema - 'You've got me?

Hollywood soon beckoned and a move to Los Angeles led to roles on TV shows including "McQueen", "Mod Squad" and "Nichols". There are very few who have been able to really perfectly gel into the legacy of Lois Lane, and Terri Hatcher is probably a close second, but there is something special about Kidder.

Sarah Douglas, who played super villain Ursa in the 1978 Superman movie and Superman II in 1980, also penned an emotional tribute alongside a picture of her and Margot.

Several months later, she revealed her diagnosis to People.

After Kidder recovered from that incident, she became an advocate for mental health awareness.

It is not yet known what Kidder died from. In 2016, she told Vulturehound she liked all forms of acting, but was the most confident as an actress when working on films. Her death is under investigation but foul play is not suspected.

The internet had a few things to say about her passing, and will undoubtedly have more. She also dated directors Brian De Palma, Tom Mankiewicz, Steven Spielberg, and Richard Pryor. There also were episodes of freaky behavior, and an auto accident that left her bankrupt and partially paralyzed, People added. In addition to promoting mental health issues, she spoke publicly as an anti-war and environmental activist. In 2007 that she hadn't had a manic episode in 11 years. Cocky, self-assured, and proud of her chain-smoking habit (and inability to spellcheck), she breathed some screwball humour into the film as well as an air of authentic newsroom brassiness. Kidder also acted on stage, including Broadway's 2002 production of The Vagina Monologues.

Kidder, born in Yellowknife, Canada, was one of five children and only 20-years-old when she first appeared in a film, 1968's The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar.
