Nigeria Announce Provisional World Cup Squad

Grant SmithMay 15, 2018

Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles coach, has released the provisional list of players to represent Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

Moses, Iwobi and Musa lead a strong group of forwards in the 30-man squad that also includes Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon.

Surprise invitee Lokosa now leads the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) goalscorers chat with 18 goals, recording his most recent goals in Kano Pillar's 3-1 victory over Kaduna United on Sunday.

The 26-year-old is a surprise inclusion after a breakthrough season in Italy where he scored seven goals, including an overhead kick against Juventus.

Most of the players that ensured Nigeria qualified for the World Cup were included in the squad.

There is only one South African-based player in the squad as Chippa United's Daniel Akpeyi was named as one of the four goalkeepers.

Regulars such as John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, William Troost-Ekong and defensive partner Leon Balogun made the cut.

Nigeria's training camp begins next Monday ahead of scheduled friendlies against Congo on May 28, England on June 2, and Czech Republic on June 6.

The Super Eagles are in Group D of the World Cup alongside two-time winners Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
