Fox Was 'Emboldened' to Revive 'Last Man Standing' After 'Roseanne' Reboot Exploded

Grant SmithMay 16, 2018

"With tediously unfunny scripts and a listless cast that looks as if it can barely wait for the director to shout 'Cut!' so it can head en masse to the unemployment office, Last Man Standing is some kind of voracious video parasite that sucks out all intellect, sense of goal or will to live".

The network announced on Friday the mutli-cam comedy has been picked up for a new season, roughly one year after its cancellation by ABC caused an uproar among some, who alleged star Tim Allen's conservative political views played a part in the network's decision to ax the series.

"We've been talking to Tim throughout the year", she said. It's a really amusing show. "And five years ago, when NBC passed on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, we went elsewhere".

Among those business reasons - "Last Man Standing" was produced for ABC by 20th Century Fox Television, and network ownership plays a large role in programming decision. Although in the age of the rebooted Roseanne and Will & Grace, no one can say for sure that anything is dead for good.

Gary Newman, Chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group, said it wasn't a "tonal shift" to ditch "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in favor of "Last Man Standing" for a more conservative audience.

This is the week that broadcasters traditionally announce their schedules for the coming season to advertisers in NY, and while they hope to draw attention - and advertising dollars - to their shiny new shows, for viewers whose shows won't be back, it can be a sad time. Walden noted Last Man Standing delivered about 8 million viewers every week on ABC with the network giving the show minimal promotion (for all its critical acclaim Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it must be noted, was averaging less than 3 million viewers).

The exec producers include Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights), Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Ridley Scott (The Man in the High Castle), David Zucker (The Good Wife) and Adam Kassan (End of Watch).

Still, Walden said Fox is pleased "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" hasn't completely lost its place on television. "Ultimately we decided we just didn't have room for it and were trying we're really happy its found a new home".

"We always wondered how it would do if it was prioritized more", she said. He said it had more to do with ABC not owning the program.

"I don't think the show delves into it very deeply", Newman told reporters Monday. "Thanks to all you guys for the support", Allen said.

In a statement sent to Fox News on Friday, Allen said he was "excited" to begin filming Season 7. "It's the fans! I could not be more grateful for the fans who wrote petitions and kept up the passion and incredible support for the show".

Shows canceled by Fox are "The Last Man on Earth", "New Girl", "The Mick", "Lucifer" and "The Exorcist".

"Last Man Standing" is set to return this fall.

In other words, a revived Tim Allen may really be the new revived Roseanne Barr, and things are gonna be messy.
