Senate Democrats urge Trump to focus on USA over China

But both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have expressed concerns that Chinese telecom companies such as ZTE have ties to the Chinese government and pose a cyberespionage threat as they move into the US market.

ZTE reached a settlement in March 2017 for violating USA export laws and paid penalties totaling $1.19 billion. The U.S. accused ZTE of misleading American regulators after it settled charges of violating sanctions against North Korea and Iran.

The U.S. Commerce Department last month blocked ZTE from importing American components for seven years.

The company produces telecommunications equipment that includes mobile phone handsets, servers, switches, routers, and cellular network gear.

"In the case of a notable export slowdown, the current credit tightening policies, especially those related to infrastructure investment, may be relaxed or reversed", she said.

Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has opposed any softening on ZTE.

"Trump's tweet creates an atmosphere where there's more hope for reaching an agreement on trade", said David Dollar, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former official at the World Bank and the U.S. Treasury Department.

"Too many jobs in China lost", Trump wrote.

That means, even if the supply ban is lifted, the Commerce Department may still seek other forms of penalty on ZTE.

Negotiators from the USA and China are scheduled to meet in Washington on Monday, where, after months of trade tensions, Beijing is said to be open to purchasing a wider array of US goods and services.

He added that US President Donald Trump would like to see a "dramatic increase" in food exports to China.

The second-largest smartphone maker in China was accused a year ago of having sold US-made technology to countries including Iran and North Korea.

The Trump administration is set to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem today, formally breaking from decades of established American policy and global practice in a move that United States officials say will create greater regional stability.

Taken aback by the rapid retaliation, Trump then threatened further tariffs on another US$100 billion worth of shipments from China.

"As a result of the Denial Order, the major operating activities of the Company have ceased", ZTE said.

It relies on USA microchips and other components for 25-30% of the equipment it produces.

The pre-installed software was discovered on Android phones and was produced by Shanghai Adups Technology Co. and deployed on more than 700 million phones, cars, and other smart devices.
