Trucker Putin opens Russian Federation bridge link with annexed Crimea

The construction of the Kerch bridge illegally, and Russia's attempts to legitimize the temporary occupation of the Crimean Peninsula - in vain.

"Let me remind you, on my behalf to the Arbitration Tribunal of the UN Convention on the law of the sea was filed on protecting the sovereign interests of Ukraine, in particular, in connection with the illegal construction of the bridge Kerch", - said Poroshenko.

Putin led a convoy of 35 vehicles across the bridge, which took 16 minutes to cross. The ceremony will be held with the participation of Vladimir Putin.

Due to the blocks imposed by Kiev and Western sanctions, a large amount of food is now transported to the peninsula from Russian Federation by ship, meaning the bridge will play an important role in reducing the region's reliance on sea transport. "Finally, thanks to your labor and your talent this project, this miracle has come true". "Particularly cynical is the fact that its discovery comes on the eve of the anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people by the Stalinist regime", - wrote Poroshenko.

Built at a cost of 223 billion roubles ($3.6 billion US), it will be the longest dual-purpose span bridge in Europe.

The United States and most Western states have not recognized Crimea as Russian territory and have imposed sanctions over the move.

"Putin initiated this project himself".

"We plan to open the truck traffic this fall; such date is planned to date", the official said responding to a question whether the bridge becomes open for trucks from October 1.

At the other end of the 19-kilometer bridge, in Crimea, Putin attended a brief open air show.

"This is an extremely important day from this point of view and in a practical sense and in symbolic terms".

Putin inspected the bridge in March ahead of the presidential election he won by a landslide, saying it was important to have the link to the Black Sea peninsula open for the summer tourist season.
