USA knows of North's secret uranium site

Howard TerryMay 16, 2018

North Korea has started to dismantle its nuclear test site, which it had pledged to close down after the inter-Korean summit on April 27, according to media reports on Tuesday.

North Korea has begun dismantling its nuclear test site ahead of a historic meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump, a U.S. monitor said Tuesday.

"This may be because on May 12, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced that the final dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test ground would be witnessed by foreign journalists and would involve the 'collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts, ' " 38 North said.

The administration of George W. Bush removed North Korea from the list in October 2008 after the country agreed to continue disabling its nuclear plant.

A campaign of diplomacy has allowed tensions to ease on the Korean Peninsula, but they were high throughout much of 2017, fueled by North Korea's missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as US military exercises and Trump's threatening statements. Additionally, according to experts, North Korea has also partially dismantled the rails of the trolleys, which lead from the tunnels.

Kim declared his nuclear force as complete in December, following North Korea's most powerful nuclear test to date in September and three flight tests of ICBMs created to reach the US mainland.

Over the weekend, the North Korean leader promised he would "completely destroy" the Punggye-ri test site saying he no longer needed the complex.

While mulling over the latest conciliatory actions of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, a theory popped into my head: perhaps Kim has a really astute adviser on all things America, someone who knows this country and its people, and understands what's going on here right now. But we are also very much interested in operationalizing the commitment as quickly as possible, ' Bolton said. He described the possibility of American agriculture being used to 'support North Korea so they can eat meat and have healthy lives'.

The first source knowledgeable on matters of the summit said, "Taking into consideration that there is an huge number of known North Korean nuclear facilities, completing a [verification and inspection] process within six months to one year is unrealistic". Pompeo, speaking on CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday said that the regime will benefit from private investment, not assistance from US taxpayers, in exchange for abandoning its nuclear weapon program. It won't be USA taxpayers.

The dismantling will come ahead of a historic summit between Kim Jong-un and Mr. Trump next month in Singapore.

North Korea has a total of four tunnels and while two were shut down following previous nuclear tests, one remained usable and the other was under construction until recently, a South Korean presidential official told reporters on Sunday under condition of anonymity. But Kang answered, "China seems to have no idea of what denuclearization means for the Korean Peninsula".
