Circadian Rhythm disruption associated with mood disorders

WEDNESDAY, May 16, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Circadian disruption and lower relative amplitude are both associated with higher risk of susceptibility to mental health issues, according to a study published online May 15 in The Lancet Psychiatry. "How do we take account of our natural patterns of rest and activity and how do we design cities or jobs to protect people's mental health?" said Daniel Smith, professor of psychiatry at the University of Glasgow and lead author of the research.

The researchers of the study from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom said that having a regular sleep and wake cycle is very significant for the mental well-being and health, as they are linked to increase the risk of bipolar disorder, depression and some other kind of mood orders. If the participants was highly active at late hours, or inactive during the day, this was classed as a disruption, Business Insider reports. This looked at scores on loneliness, unhappiness, reaction time, depression, bipolar disease, anxiety and neuroticism etc.

"What that tells us is about the inconsistency or the disruption in the regularity of the routine of rest and activity", said Smith.

Mathematical modelling was used to investigate associations between low relative amplitude (reflecting greater activity during rest periods and/or daytime inactivity) and lifetime risk of mood disorder, as well as wellbeing and cognitive function. The result of this comparison was called the relative amplitude. While not all participants who wore a tracker answered all questions, the team say the sample is large enough to unpick links. Individuals with lower relative amplitude were at greater risk of several adverse mental health outcomes, even after adjusting for confounding factors, such as age, sex, lifestyle, education and previous childhood trauma. It decides your sleeping time in a 24 hour day. Shifts in energy levels and sleep disturbances are common during clinical depression and episodes of bipolar disorder. He added that the main sufferers were people with poor sleep hygiene. Circadian rhythms occur in plants, animals and throughout biology.

But it's not just what you do at night, he said, it's what you do during the day - trying to be active during the day and inactive in darkness, he said. "Especially in the winter, making sure you get out in the morning in the fresh air is just as important in getting a good night's sleep as not being on your mobile phone".
