Knights beat Jets, even series

Vegas Golden Knights forward Tomas Tatar scores in the first period of Game 2 against the Winnipeg Jets on May 14.

When the Golden Knights saw up close how good Marchessault was as their leading scorer in early January, they signed him to a $30 million, six-year contract extension.

That's what Jonathan Marchessault and the Vegas Golden Knights were able to accomplish Monday night in Winnipeg. The best-of-seven series resumes Wednesday on the floor of the Mojave Desert. It will be the Washington Capitals versus the Tampa Bay Lightning in the east and the Las Vegas Knights versus the Winnipeg Jets in the west.

For the first time in the team's history, they'll go into a playoff game trailing in a best-of-seven series. "He's the best goalie in the playoffs as far as I'm concerned".

Brayden McNabb and William Karlsson beat Connor Hellebuyck, who made 19 saves. Being aware of this is something the Jets need to do so as to exploit the opportunity. Even though the Golden Knights were getting chances, the building was ready to explode and the game was ready to snowball like it did Saturday night.

The game remained 2-0 for almost 36 minutes of game time and when Winnipeg finally got on the board and got their fans going, the Golden Knights first line sprung into action and did their part in taking the 15,321 white clad maniacs right back out of the game. Nor are the Jets San Jose, a solid team but one missing spiritual leader Joe Thornton and also with depth challenges when compared to Winnipeg and Nashville. "We just couldn't get any momentum going". Then moments later the snake-bitten Nikolaj Ehlers who has been held goalless throughout the playoffs hit the crossbar. The left winger missed an open net from two feet away, clanking the puck off the right post. Marchessault made no mistake, sliding a backhand between the legs of Hellebuyck to double the Vegas lead.

The rough stuff that predominated in Game 1 continued. Near the end of the second, Dustin Byfuglien and Ryan Reaves clashed in a scrum around Hellebuyck. Not exactly a ton of risk involved there, especially after Vegas had three first-round picks in 2017.

And then, just as suddenly, it was 3-1.

The Golden Knights had dispatched the Sharks in round two last Sunday with a 3-0 shutout, but the roles were reversed against the Jets. It was his first point in five postseason contests.

"It's a series. I don't think anybody is panicking", Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba said. "Everybody has to be more competitive". "It's good. Obviously, the fans are the seventh man on the ice, but I think we played great and took control the rest of the game".

He recalls the sadness when the team left in 1996 and the excitement when they returned in 2011, even though by that time he was calling Toronto home. They were at the top of the Western Conference, they were clearly emerging as contenders, and they were in the market for some help. They are only the second team in National Hockey League playoff history to win on the road in a seventh game after being shut out at home in Game 6.

Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg has a well-earned reputation as a tough place to play. Marchessault now has 15 points in the playoffs, which is a record for playoff points by a player on an expansion team. "It changes every time the puck drops". Cano is batting.287 with four homers, 23 RBIs and a.385 on-base percentage in 39 games this season.

Notes: Game 6, if necessary, will be May 22 in Vegas, while a potential Game 7 would go May 24 in Winnipeg. It is over with. "You know what you're going to get out of him, and when you know what you're going to get out of a guy, it allows you to go out and do your job".

It wasn't a ideal game, or really anything close for the Golden Knights, but it was a road playoff game in a hostile environment.

The goal did more than just give the Knights the quick lead they were hoping for after falling behind 3-0 early in a Game 1 loss. Teammate Josh Morrissey says he is not surprised with Scheifele's success.
