Mohoric claims Giro 10th stage, Yates maintains lead

Grant SmithMay 17, 2018

After 11 stages of Simon Yates ahead of Tom Dumoulin for 47 seconds.

Bennett recorded his fourth straight top-20 effort on the gruelling tour though he has lost time on overall leader Simon Yates of Britain.

Defending champion Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb tried to close Yates down, but finished 2 seconds behind the Lancashire rider and is now 47 seconds behind him in in second place in the overall standings.

Wet roads in the finale made for treacherous conditions, causing punctures for Dumoulin and Richard Carapaz, who is fifth overall and leads the young rider classification.

Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome moved up one spot to 10th, 2:30 back.

The Team Sky rider dropped off the pace during the final ascent to finish 40 seconds behind Yates. "The plan was that if it came back I would, of course, try". I haven't done much this year, so it's good to get the racing in.

"That was defiantly a lot harder than I expected", Bennett said after the race.

The Englishman, riding for Mitchelton-Scott, launched an opportunistic late attack in the run-in to the finish of stage 11 in the hilltop town of Osimo. The Dutchman, the first to win the Giro overall in 2017, charged immediately after Yates Wednesday and closed in as the finish line neared.

"He's getting better as the race goes on".

"As for Tom behind me, I didn't actually know until we crested the climb a little bit towards the top because I was just going full gas and I don't like to look behind, if I did I wasn't paying attention to who it was".

Italy's Davide Formolo was third, a further three seconds behind, after the 156km hilly route from the central city of Assisi across to Osimo near the Adriatic coast. "I certainly haven't given up hope". "But I have to keep trying because I still don't have enough".

"I'm definitely not going to lie, it took a whack out of me that crash before the start in Jerusalem and in this game if you're not at your absolute best there's nowhere to hide, " Froome said.

This weekend with the stage to Monte Zoncolan and the climb-heavy day to Sappada much could change.
