Eagles' White House visit might actually happen after team reportedly gets invite

Grant SmithMay 18, 2018

The team hasn't commented on the formal invite, but said in April that they would go.

Among the players who won't be attending are anthem protester and Players Coalition leader Malcolm Jennings, who was particularly vehement about his decision to turn down an invitation to meet Donald Trump.

There are plenty of folks who think players should just go to the White House for the experience.

"Many of us have no interest in supporting President Trump", Lurie said. "But this is not where you brandish a group of people because they own assets in a sport we love, supporting what many of us perceive as, you know, one [expletive] disastrous presidency". He issued a statement on the visit after the team won Super Bowl LII.

Such visits have grabbed headlines in past years, with members of the New England Patriots boycotting the visit last year.

"Over the last two years, I've been meeting with legislators, both Republican and Democrat, it don't matter. I'm about creating positive change in the communities that I come from", Jenkins told ABC in February.

Trump's presidency has thrown a wrench into the tradition of championship teams visiting the White House, as many players who oppose his presidency have stated they wouldn't go; Trump rescinded an invitation to the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors after the players and coach Steve Kerr indicated they weren't planning on going anyway.

"Going to the White House should be seen as an honor, and I believe it is an honor, but to me it has to be an honor with the right type of respect in office". "But visiting the White House is not something that I'm interested in doing at this time". I just don't see it. "We hope to have something finalized in the next couple of weeks".

Philadelphia's ABC affiliate quoted Long as saying: "At end of the day I do not want to sit, take a picture with somebody I don't care for".
