'God made you like this,' Pope reportedly tells gay man

Cruz said Francis had also told him: "God made you this way and loves you this way, and it doesn't matter to me".

Juan Carlos Cruz spoke with the pope a few weeks ago about abuse he suffered from the Chilean priest, Fernando Karadima.

In his meeting with Francis on a Sunday at his Santa Marta residence, Mr. Cruz said he had told the pope that he was anxious he would think less of him.

So, Cruz tells CNN that the Pope told him: "You know Juan Carlos, that does not matter".

Think of it this way: if God truly is the embodiment of love, then we were all perfectly made in that image which embodies every sex, gender, race, and sexuality. "I felt also that he was hurting, which for me was very solemn, because it's not often that the Pope says sorry to you. You have to be happy with who you are", Cruz reportedly told El País, a Spanish newspaper.

"We do not normally comment on the Pope's private conversations."

"If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" the pope said at the time.

"Our hope, though, is that Pope Francis would say these words publicly, not just in the context of a private conversation".

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, a collection of official teachings, states that gay and lesbian people should "be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity", but considers acting on same-sex desires to be sinful.

Following Francis' meeting with Cruz, all 34 of Chile's bishops offered to resign after years of denying abuse at the heart of the church.

In the message, released at the Vatican May 19, Pope Francis said the upcoming Synod of Bishops in Rome in October, the month of the missions, will be devoted to young people, offering "an opportunity to understand more fully, in the light of faith, what the Lord Jesus wants to say to you young people, and, through you, to all Christian communities".

The priest who abused him was never brought to trial for his crimes in Chile, but was barred from preaching after being found guilty by the Vatican back in 2011. The revised edition says: "This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for majority a trial".

As Pope Francis told a group of Salvadoran pilgrims in 2015, even after his death Blessed Romero "was defamed, slandered, his memory tarnished, and his martyrdom continued, including by his brothers in the priesthood and in the episcopate".

The Catholic Church teaches that because of original sin, all human beings are born with a wounded nature and sinful inclinations, which together are referred to as "concupiscence".

I would like to see the pope's apparent openness mirrored by others in the Roman Catholic church.
