Special task force to probe 1MDB

Gani's replacement, Apandi Ali, who was handpicked by Najib, cleared the PM from any wrongdoing in connection with 1MDB in January 2016, bringing the investigation to an end.

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was summoned on Tuesday (May 22) to make a statement in a probe on a subsidiary company of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said.

They have been barred from leaving the country, and police have seized handbags, jewels and cash during raids on properties linked to the couple. "This task force will also be responsible for seeking cooperation of various enforcement agencies in the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, Canada and other related countries", Mohamed's office said [Al Jazeera report] on Monday.

Najib has denied any criminal wrongdoing, saying the money deposited into his bank accounts was a donation from a Saudi royal.

The raids were livestreamed on social media, with police confiscating 284 luxurious Hermes Birkin handbags and 72 suitcases filled with cash, jewellery and other valuable items.

The MACC action is just the beginning of a new probe into the alleged theft of billions of dollars from 1MDB, a scandal that dogged the last three years of Najib's near-decade-long rule and was one of the main reasons why voters dumped him in a general election on May 9.

"Yes, I have withdrawn", he said in a text message shortly before midnight.

"Enforcement agencies should not be feeding social media trolls, but observe and uphold strict professionalism at all times", it added.

Rosmah Mansor, who is the wife of recently ousted Prime Minister Najib Razak, is believed to have spent close to $8 million Australian dollars between 2008 and 2015.

Rosmah, in a brief statement issued by law firm Valen, Oh & Partners, said recent incidents appear to have been doe with the aim of generating anger among the public towards the family.

He said investigations to follow up on the prince's claims however came to a standstill as MACC was unable to probe any further without consent from the attorney-general. A government official said he could possibly be detained after that.

As these funds were moved through Malaysian, rather than foreign, financial institutions it was easier for MACC investigators to establish the money trail. "To topple the party, they had to target the president".

"Usually, we are the ones that need to look for the witnesses".
