Harvey Weinstein arrives to surrender in sex assault probe

Two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press the case will include allegations by Lucia Evans, an aspiring actress who has said the Hollywood mogul forced her to perform oral sex on him in his office.

Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment, though Weinstein has said repeatedly through his lawyers that he didn't have non-consensual sex with anyone.

The charges filed Friday stem from incidents with two separate women in 2013 and 2004, the Manhattan district attorney said in a statement, and were the result of a joint investigation between police and the Manhattan DA's office.

Weinstein was led out of the 1st Precinct police station in hand cuffs and taken to New York's Supreme Court, where the judge agreed to the pre-negotiated $1.32 million cash bail (US$1m) or $13.2 million (US$10m) bond in addition to a Global Positioning System bracelet and protection order, stating he must stay away from his accusers.

An investigative grand jury, still convened, will look into other sexual assault allegations against Weinstein as well as possible financial crimes relating to how he paid women to stay silent, the report said.

McGowan claims she was rapped by Weinstein in 1997 in his hotel suite after a screening of her film Going All the Way at the Sundance Film Festival.

Evans told The New Yorker in a story published in October that she repeatedly told Weinstein to stop but "didn't want to kick him or fight him".

I hope this gives hope to victims and survivors everywhere.

More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing, and authorities in California and London are also investigating assault allegations.

Weinstein was sacked from the company he co-founded and expelled from the organization that bestows the Academy Awards last fall after The New York Times and The New Yorker published articles about his treatment of women, including multiple allegations that he groped actresses, exposed himself to them or forced them into unwanted sex.

"The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice", the statement continued. "I tried to get away, but maybe I didn't try hard enough. I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", she said.

Eventually, she said, the burly executive "overpowered" her.

Actor Ashley Judd last month sued Weinstein, saying that he cost her a part in the Lord of the Rings movies after she rejected his sexual advances, charges that Weinstein has denied. "It's both", she said.

"It was like it was just another day for him", Evans said.

Mr Vance, however, also faces an investigation into why he did not bring the film mogul into court years ago.

Weinstein hired Brafman, one of America's most celebrated criminal defence lawyers, last November, just days after NY police announced they were gathering evidence for a possible arrest warrant. One of Brafman's past clients, former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, ultimately escaped criminal prosecution for alleged sexual assault in 2011.

The police passed the case to prosecutors.
