Obese children face increased cancer risk if weight gain continues, experts warn

The organization also recommends several other habits that may help someone avoid cancer. They also note that their finding of "increased risk of pancreatic cancer by moderate and high weight gain is novel". It's also important not to rely on supplements and nutritional needs should be met through diet alone where possible.

"Our research shows it's unlikely that specific foods or nutrients are important single factors in causing or protecting against cancer", said Dr. Mitrou, per the Business Insider article.

Currently, one in six deaths worldwide is due to cancer. Researchers found links among diet, weight, physical activity, and cancer prevention and survival.

Alcohol, meanwhile, was "strongly" associated with cancer of the breast, liver, mouth, bowel, throat, esophagus, and stomach. The guidelines are based on a study of more than 50 million people, which the WCRF says is the largest cancer study ever conducted.

Although the study couldn't prove cause and effect, obesity was tied to a rise in the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer by 20 percent and kidney cancer by 95 percent.

Up to 40% of cancers are preventable, says the World Cancer Research Fund, launching its updated report on the reasons for the global spread.

The fund identified links between obesity and seven different types of cancers 10 years ago.

"Avoiding tobacco in any form, together with appropriate diet, nutrition and physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight, have the potential over time to reduce much of the global burden of cancer", the report said. Researchers pointed out that consuming these drinks can lead to weight gain and could cause cancer.

The aim of the report is not to worry people, she said.

People should reduce their consumption of fast food and those high in fat, starches and sugars to help control calorie intake, it states. "We want people to know that what food they eat, what they weigh and how physically active they are can affect their risk and this report gives practical information on what patterns of diet and activity are conducive to reducing the risk of cancer".

Caroline Cerny of the Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of health organisations, said: "As this report shows, carrying excess weight can increase the risk of cancer".

"It's clear we need an environment that supports and encourages healthy choices, rather than steering us towards unhealthy options with constant adverts, promotions and offers".

Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, Chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance U.K., welcomed the warning against alcohol use and said: "It is clear from the evidence in the report that drinking alcohol can not be justified for other health reasons-to prevent heart disease, for example". But it also reduces the risk of many other cancers because it helps people to maintain a healthy weight. It's what you do most days that matters.
