Rain from Alberto brings chance of flooding

Ismael LynchMay 30, 2018

The NHC said: "Heavy rainfall will lead to a significant risk of flash flooding across the Florida Panhandle, much of Alabama, and western Georgia through tonight, spreading northwest into northern Georgia, the western Carolina and Tennessee on Tuesday".

The flow of moisture out of the South is expected to continue, bringing a chance of daytime showers and thunderstorms to the Triangle through the week and into the weekend, Carroll said.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Middle Tennessee through 7 a.m. Wednesday. "There's not going to be a lot of grilling or boating going on - it's going to be messy".

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and was moving north at 8 miles per hour (13 kph).

As Alberto pulls further away to the north, it's tailing trough will break down overhead tomorrow.

The storm was expected to weaken after it makes landfall later Monday.

The pelting rain soaked the uniform and socks of Lt. Andy Husar with the Bay County Sheriff's Office, who watched surf get kicked up along Panama City Beach on Monday.

According to Gardner, the rain will come in bands Monday, picking up in intensity with some heavy downpours before slowing down.

By Tuesday, showers will be more scattered, and it warms back into the 80s. These rains may produce flooding and flash flooding. Tropical storm warnings were up for parts of the Panhandle and the Alabama coast.

Lifeguards posted red flags along the white sands of Pensacola Beach, where swimming and wading were banned amid high surf and unsafe conditions.

The storm's approach also triggered mandatory evacuations of some small, sparsely populated Gulf Coast barrier islands in one Florida county.

Rough conditions were whipping up big waves off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast, and authorities warned swimmers to stay out of the surf because of life-threatening swells and rip currents.

Alberto got an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, which doesn't officially start until Friday.

Shell plans to restore production at its Ram Powell Hub in the Viosca Knoll area of the Gulf as it soon as the platform can operate safely, the company said.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Ryan Rogers said the storm would be "coming very close to shore" around 8 a.m. Monday and make landfall around noon.

Some tornadoes could also be touched off.

Despite the downgrade to depression, the storm still poses the same impacts as it did today. Last year, there were 17 named storms, 10 of which became hurricanes; the first named storm was Arlene - a rare preseason tropical storm that arrived in April.
