Your Regular Health Supplements Are Good For Nothing

The scientists point to increasing the amount of fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods as an easy way of boosting the amounts of vitamins and minerals in our diets, and suggest focusing on living a healthy lifestyle rather than trying to find the answer to long life in a bottle.

According to the systematic review of existing data and single randomized control and the trials published from January 2012 to October 2017, multivitamins, calcium, vitamin D, and some other common supplements have no advantage against prevention of cardiovascular problems and early death.

Vitamins and minerals have always been used to treat nutrient deficiencies, but in recent years, supplements have been promoted as a means for overall health and longevity.

For the study, the team reviewed the most common supplements taken by the general population including A, B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6, B9 (folic acid), C, D and E.

Vitamin D, calcium, vitamin C, and multivitamins do not have consistent benefits in preventing heart disease, stroke, and premature death.

However, niacin and antioxidants showed signs they could actually be harmful - because they showed a very small increased risk of death from any cause. He recommends people to rely on a healthy diet and get the vitamins and minerals naturally.

"There may be lots of money to be made selling supplements to gullible people", says Stanton, "but these products can not match the literally thousands of important components available in healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, fish, nuts and seeds".

Vitamins: To supplement or not to supplement?

Many popular multivitamin supplements have no impact on health. They also found that excess folic acid in daily supplements can also be linked to prostate cancer.

The results can be found published online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The science is in - and those who make a living selling vitamins and mineral supplements for the supposed health benefits of these products should be shaking in their boots.

Yet more people would benefit by changing their diet to account for these nutrients than by taking supplements, the authors wrote.

"Folic acid administration and the reduction of cardiovascular disease through stroke seen in the Chinese CSPPT trial provides the only example of cardiovascular disease risk reduction by supplement use in the period following the Preventive Services Task Recommendation", Jenkins went on to say.

However, one vitamin which seemed to work as expected was folic acid.

There were, however, a few apparently advantageous supplements.
