SpaceX set for Falcon 9 rocket launch

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched early Monday morning, carrying a commercial communications satellite. The first stage is back on the launch pad Sunday for its second flight.

Air Force weather officials are predicting a 70 percent chance of good launch weather for the four-hour June 4 launch window, starting at 12:29 a.m.

Elon Musk's SpaceX announced back in February a year ago that, in late 2018, it would fly two paying space tourists around the Moon and back to Earth. The Block 5 variant of the rocket, optimized for reusability, has flown a single time, on May 11.

SpaceX has landed these boosters 25 times, and reflown them on a dozen occasions.

Musk also wants to reuse the two-stage Falon 9's upper stage and its payload fairing - the nose cone that protects satellites during launch. "Ironically, we need to take it apart to confirm it does not need to be taken apart".

Payer traveled from SES headquarters in Luxembourg to watch the launch of his company's SES-12 satellite.

The 12,000-pound SES-12 spacecraft, built by Airbus Defence and Space, will deliver high-speed data to across Asia and the Pacific. The satellite will be deployed roughly 32 minutes after liftoff.
