Bill Clinton: 'I was mad at me' over interview about Monica Lewinsky

Irene MckinneyJun 06, 2018

Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said that Clinton should have resigned after the Lewinsky affair.

Clinton eventually remembered a perfunctory nod toward women's rights.

He clarified those comments later, saying he had become "hot under the collar" during the interview because of how the questions were asked.

He said that he does not owe Lewinsky a personal apology and that he left the White House $16 million in debt due to the scandal. I did say, publicly, on more than one occasion, that I was sorry.

As a first-time novelist, Mr. Clinton revealed that he was devouring coverage of the book, especially the reviews. "Its way overdue. It doesnt mean I agree with everything". I meant it now.

"Beyond that, I think it would be good if we could go on with the discussion", Clinton added.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Tuesday on Fox News" "America's Newsroom" that "it sounded like Bill Clinton took a poll from one interview to the next, they poll-tested a response, and he decided, "You know what? And I think what was lost were the two points that I made that are important to me", Clinton told a NY audience at an event for his book tour on Monday evening. "He thinks he's still somehow a victim", Paul said.

Earlier this year, Lewinsky wrote in an essay that the #MeToo movement had caused her to reexamine her relationship with Clinton through a new lens, and she concluded that the affair constituted a "gross abuse of power" on Clinton's part.

Asked if he would apologize privately to Ms. Lewinsky today if she were in the room, Mr. Clinton replied, "If she were here now and I would speak to her, it wouldn't be a private conversation".

"We've put a lot of trust and faith in our candidates across America, candidates like Conor Lamb, who is driving the bus, if you will, and making sure that surrogates will travel out there, that made a difference to his constituents", Lujan emphasized.

Lewinsky has not directly responded to the recent hubbub over Clinton's answers, but she did tweet on Monday that she was "grateful to the myriad people who have helped me evolve + gain perspective in the past 20 years".
