GOP leader McConnell cancels most of Senate's August recess

Howard TerryJun 07, 2018

Some GOP senators sent a letter to McConnell last month urging him to keep the chamber in session to vote on nominations and legislation, and Senate leaders have said the appetite to stay in town has grown in their ranks.

Corker, a vocal critic of Trump, told reporters that he expects the president's reaction to the plan "might not be so positive", but it is a necessary undertaking to reassert congressional authority. Trump inherited more than 100 vacancies on day one of his term, including the Supreme Court seat held open for almost a year.

"Senate Republicans are running scared", Quigley concluded.

His decision has been widely anticipated in the Senate Republican Conference.

Senators of both parties said they welcomed the extra weeks of work, with Democrats signaling they intend to use the period to focus attention on health care. Ten of those seats are in states won by Trump, including Nelson's here in Florida. Polls show that issue is a top public concern, and Democrats believe the GOP's failed effort to repeal Obama's health care law a year ago has put Republicans on the defensive.

The decision has ramifications for senators up for re-election this fall, a number that includes Cruz, who otherwise is expected to have spent much of August campaigning in Texas.

Republicans said Senate Democrats have forced 100 procedural votes to free up Trump's executive and judicial nominees, which they said was far more than the six previous presidents combined had experienced during their first two years in office. The House is scheduled to adjourn July 26 for the August break, and not return until after Labor Day. "There has been historic obstruction by Senate Democrats, and there is a long to-do list, including important nominations and appropriations bills, that we hope they can get taken care of".
