Jutanugarn wins US Women's Open on fourth playoff hole

"It's fun for her, but not for us".

For the longest time on a steamy Sunday afternoon in the 73rd U.S. Women's Open at Shoal Creek, a sport sneered in response.

This wild day was a ideal microcosm of Ariya's roller-coaster career.

As is the custom for LPGA winners, Ariya Jutanugarn found herself doused with water after the final hole. She nearly did both Sunday in the foothills of the Southern Appalachians.

Relief: Ariya Jutanugarn holds the US Open trophy after defeating Kim Hyo-joo in a playoff at Shoal Creek on Sunday. "But I wouldn't work for anyone else".

But Kim made another bogey at the 18th, and a fourth consecutive par was enough for Jutanugarn to add to her 2016 Women's British Open title.

"Actually, I wasn't keeping up with the score at the time so I didn't really know about it".

Australian Sarah Jane Smith fired a second-round 67 to grab a four-shot clubhouse lead before unsafe weather halted play at the US Women's Open in Alabama on Friday. "After that I was a little bit scared, like my next shot".

Having worked with mental coach in Thailand for around two years, a positive mindset was the key to Jutanugarn's subsequent victory, secured after the fourth playoff hole.

After a long wait on the tee at the par-three 16th, Ariya hit a magnificent seven-iron from 200 yards that covered the pin the entire way before nestling three feet away and the birdie restored a two-shot cushion with two to play.

So does their mother, Apple.

The mind tricks weren't working, but she wasn't going to stop trying.

Kim says she wasn't thinking about the huge deficit she faced.

Fortunately, Luark knows that, too.

This wasn't the same Ariya Jutanugarn who tripled the final hole at home in Thailand as a 17-year-old.

Jutanugarn and the other golfers battled rough weather conditions all week at the Alabama course, including a postponement of play Friday that meant both the second and third rounds had to be completed the following day.

Smith, who is ranked 97th in the world, has put on an impressive performance this week after she switched back to a old set of clubs.

Kiwi Lydia Ko has finished tied for 50th at nine-over, after a one-over final round. Talley had gained a shot and was one-under for her round through six and at 1-over for the championship in a tie for 28th. Do you want to win?' " Jutanugarn said.

So with Kim charging, Luark appealed to the stubborn side of Jutanugarn, the maddening side of her personality that Luark has come to respect as much as he tolerates.

"I think I'm going to sleep pretty well", Jutanugarn said. "But, I'm not nervous or excited anymore when I have playoff", she said.

Ariya had birdied her first hole and was six-under for the tournament through eight holes when the horn sounded to end play for the day. I said 'May, talk to me.
