Tiananmen Square massacre: what happened 29 years ago?

Howard TerryJun 07, 2018

The MAC issued the call in a statement issued that day ahead of the 29th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident on June 4, 1989.

The bloody crackdown on pro-democracy Chinese student protestors at Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, remains one of the most censored political taboos in China today, as the Chinese regime has consistently downplayed the People's Liberation Army's bloody "cleansing" of Beijing streets and Tiananmen Square that night.

The US on Monday urged China to make a full public account of those killed, detained or who went missing during a crackdown on student-led pro-democracy protests in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. Estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand.

"We call on China to take steps toward democratic reform, and to protect free speech, freedom of religion and other rights of its people, and to properly address the facts surrounding the Tiananmen Square Massacre", it said.

A survivor of the massacre that squelched student protest in China in 1988 says the world should boycott the 2022 Olympics that will be held in Beijing, reports Slate.

Mr Pompeo quoted the dissident Liu Xiaobo, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died of cancer while in custody a year ago, as saying: "The ghosts of June 4th have not yet been laid to rest".

In response to Pompeo's comments, China had lodged "stern representations" with the United States, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday.

Hu Ping, another well-known Chinese dissident, said that the lack of democracy in China will eventually bring about catastrophic consequences for the United States and the world, as the Chinese Communist Party continues to increase its power while acting aggressively overseas.

In their annual open letter, the Tiananmen Mothers, who represent the families of those who died, said the government was guilty of serious disrespect by ignoring their requests for redress.

Hong Kong is the only place on Chinese soil where the anniversary is openly marked with a famous vigil in Victoria Park on June 4 each year.

A public opinion poll by the University of Hong Kong found that the proportion of people who think Hong Kong residents have "a responsibility to instigate the development of democracy in China" has dropped from 58 percent to 56 percent this year.

Meanwhile, the MAC also called on China to respect the fundamental human rights of Taiwanese in the global community to promote harmonious interactions between the two sides and facilitate improved cross-strait relations.
