Trump commutes sentence for Kardashian-backed drug offender

Irene MckinneyJun 07, 2018

Johnson apologized for her involvement with drug dealers, but noted that she had only done it out of desperation, and that the law under which she had been sentenced had been changed since her sentencing. The decision comes almost a week after Kim Kardashian met with him about Johnson's case. "I'll do whatever it takes to get her out". Holley, who started her career in the Los Angeles' public defender's office, was hired by Johnnie Cochran to help during the trial. Shawn Holley has represented celebrity clients like Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Ritchie.

Alice Marie, a 63-year-old great-grandmother, had been serving a life sentence without parole since 1996 for money laundering and drug conspiracy charges, with her plight highlighted by Kim late last year when she discovered her story.

Kim Kardashian West met US President Donald Trump at the White House on 30 May 2018 to discuss prison reform. The senior advisor's father, Charles Kushner, was imprisoned for a year in 2005 for tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions. West also revealed that she herself broke the news to Johnson over the phone. Get a bill to my desk.

But Kardashian West didn't stop there.

Kim K went to Twitter Wednesday (June 6) to break the news.

The commutation, which is different than a pardon, puts a renewed focus on the Trump administration's push for prison and sentencing reform. Still others reminded everyone that Obama granted acts of clemency to 1,715 people, so this one commutation by Trump does not undo Obama's record or legacy.

It was unclear at the time of the earlier statement when her release would be.

Alice Marie Johnson has been released from federal prison hours after her life sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump.

Kardashian West had seen a Mic interview about Johnson's case, and "was not only moved to tears, but moved to action".

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star's hunch was correct.

Democrats and Trump critics have warned that the president might be sending a message to his former aides and associates caught up in the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation or the probe of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen by the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office.

Kardashian-West has reacted to Trump's decision on Twitter. "I hope to continue this important work by working together with organizations who have been fighting this fight for much longer than I have and deserve the recognition".

Kardashian's lawyer, Holly, also praised the commutation in a statement to ABC News.

Her release was confirmed by Jennifer Turner of the American Civil Liberties Union, who is part of Johnson's legal team. "It was a moment I will never forget".

While Johnson was deserving of clemency, the manner in which her case was brought to Trump's attention was unprecedented and raises fairness concerns, said Margaret Love, a lawyer who formerly served as the U.S. Pardon Attorney in the Justice Department.
