What's New in Android P Developer Preview 3 (Beta 2)?

Nichole VegaJun 07, 2018

In Android P's Developer Preview 2, the menu now shows a photo-a cloudy sunset behind a couple of palm trees-so you can more immediately see the effects of your choice.

Google also says Beta 2 introduces final Android P APIs. The updates are already starting to roll now over, but Google has also posted factory images and OTA images, in case you'd like to download the update manually.

Others can enroll their device in the Android Beta program.

In addition to Google's Pixel devices, the first Android P beta was made available on the Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6, and Essential PH-1. Up until now, Android development teams are still securing the Android framework and Media framework, a process that begun with the Stagefright bug and feels like it won't end anytime soon. Developers can thus start confidently building with Android P features and APIs today.

Google is also including two new gender-neutral designs "Family" and 'Couple with Heart.' This builds on the first gender-neutral emoji introduced a year ago, and the company says more gender-neutral emoji are on the way. The company partnered with DeepMind to use machine learning to improve battery life; the feature is called Adaptive Battery. These new emoji may be revised further before the consumer release of Android P, Google noted.

In the meantime, Google is encouraging developers to publish APK updates that are compiled against, or optionally targeting, API 28. The update includes the June 5, 2018 Android security patch.
