Amazon To Exclusively Broadcast Premier League Games From 2019

Irene MckinneyJun 08, 2018

Amazon said it will stream 20 Premier League matches per year for three seasons, starting in 2019, for Prime members in the U.K. It will begin with a midweek round of matches in December 2019 and a slate of matches on Boxing Day.

Amazon has broken Sky and BT's stranglehold on Premier League football by striking a groundbreaking deal to livestream exclusive coverage of 20 matches per season online.

BT was handed an additional package of live games in the final round at a total cost of £90m, taking its tally of games per season to 52 versus the 128 for Sky.

It has always been rumoured that an Internet giant would get in on the Premier League action, breaking the recent monopoly of BT Sport and Sky Sports, and now Amazon has stepped up to the plate. It will see Amazon show two full rounds of fixtures a season, one on a bank holiday and another during the week. Today's Premier League announcement, and the recent deal with NOW TV, means BT TV customers will have access to all of the best exclusively live sporting action in the UK.

"The Premier League is the most watched sports league in the world". The company said it would make the games available as part of its current Amazon Prime subscription deal.

Independent.ie understands that the prospect of a global Premier League television deal could be discussed in the near future, with one rights holder owner working in partnership with the league to broadcast the matches around the world.

The Premier League joins US Open Tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events and NFL games, all now available to watch live on Prime Video in the United Kingdom, and at no extra cost to Prime membership.

Amazon's entry into the market breaks Sky and BT's five-year stranglehold on Premier League rights.

The groundbreaking agreement was announced by the Premier League on Thursday.

The Premier League's last deal, agreed in 2015 and running until 2019, was worth £5.14bn.

It was one of two packages of domestic rights that remained unsold from an auction this year.

"When the Premier League was formed in 1992 nobody could have envisaged the scale of global growth in the competition which exists now", Scudamore said.

The awarding of one of the two remaining batches of rights - four months after Sky and BT took the lion's share of the rights on offer - follows huge speculation at the time of the initial bid over Amazon's intentions, with analysts divided over whether the online giant would mount a bid.
