Dominic Thiem ready for 'legendary' match against Alexander Zverev in Paris

Grant SmithJun 08, 2018

The world number three said: "I thought it was a bit ridiculous, to be honest, because I was on the other side of the court".

At 2-2 in the fourth, Zverev saved two break points and then broke for 4-2 after Khachanov led 40-15 on serve.

It is the Austrian, Thiem, who is the [1.63] market favourite to make the semi-finals, and this puts us in an interesting quandary.

He admitted he was also close to quitting at 1-5 down in the second set.

Up next for Keys is Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, who upset 26th seed Czech Barbora Strycova 6-4 6-3.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens cruised past Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-0, 6-2 to book a last-eight spot for the first time.

Although not known as a clay-court specialist, the 13th-seeded Keys has not lost a set at Roland Garros.

He will be wary of Cecchinato, though, after the Italian world number 72 produced a sensational display to down Djokovic. "I'll get myself ready", Zverev said. "It will be a pleasure to play against Novak".

Novak Djokovic equaled Roger Federer's mark of reaching nine consecutive quarterfinals at Roland Garros by beating No. 30 seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday.

Keys mentioned she was trying ahead to Monday's blockbuster between Maria Sharapova - they share the identical agent, Max Eisenbud - and Serena Williams.

Broadcaster ITV has all the coverage of the French Open this year, covering the Grand Slam from 9.30am-9pm every day until the latter stages.

Kasatkina win the first, 7-6.

The Serb, three-times a Wimbledon champion, appeared distraught after his quarter-final defeat by unseeded Marco Cecchinato in which he was treated for neck pain.

The 23-year-old will next face U.S. Open runner-up Madison Keys. One of the four will become a first-time French Open finalist. I can last five-set matches in a row, how I showed.

He will take on Dominic Thiem in his Grand Slam quarterfinal debut, after Thiem eliminated Japanese top-ranked Nishikori Kei 6-2, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.

"The first two sets were wonderful but then he (Nishikori) raised his levels", Thiem said.

Striking the ball cleanly and powerfully in ideal conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier, the big-serving Keys bagged the opener in the blink of an eye against an overpowered opponent offering little resistance.

After Zverev avoided the bagel, Thiem was forced to save a break point as he held for 5-1, though avoided having to serve out, with the Austrian converting a third match point on the German's serve to reach the last four once again.

He might need to up that schedule considering his quarterfinal opponent is No. 7 Dominic Thiem of Austria, who is one of the fittest players on the men's circuit and has reached the past two semifinals at Roland Garros.

"I'm young. I might as well stay on court and entertain you guys", Zverev, 21, joked with the crowd. "All the hours in the gym have paid off".

I will do everything I can to recover, as I said after the last match. "I lost to my friend Sloane in the U.S. Open final past year but I hope for big things here".
