Facebook reveals it publicly shared the private posts of 14 million users

For a period of four days in May, about 14 million Facebook users around the world had their default sharing setting for all new posts set to public, the company revealed Thursday.

"We recently found a bug that automatically suggested posting publicly when some people were creating their Facebook posts", said Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, told CNN.

It is still unclear how numerous 14 million profiles that were affected may have posted content privately without realizing they were sharing publicly.

This week, The Washington Post reported that Facebook shared special user data with Huawei - a Chinese firm that lawmakers say poses a national security threat.

Teens are leaving Facebook a lot lately, so in an attempt to hold them back, it's looking towards Musical.ly for inspiration ... To be clear, this bug did not impact anything people had posted before - and they could still choose their audience just as they always have.

The bug affected posts shared between May 18 and May 27, though Facebook started rolling out a fix on May 22.

"It will take some time to work through all the changes we need to make across the company", Zuckerberg said on the first day of hearings. It happened because Facebook was building a "featured items" option on your profile that highlights photos and other content.

Affected Facebook users received a notification on the app or website starting Thursday.

Considering that Facebook has almost 2.2 billion users worldwide, the number of affected users is small. These items are visible to the public, however, the company extended that setting to all the new posts, TechCrunch reports. For a bug to break that system for millions of users is yet another major problem Facebook is going to have to deal with. In the meantime, it has reverted the audience for any affected posts to whatever setting the user had selected previously.
