From bourbon to boats, Mexico strikes back against United States steel tariffs

Howard TerryJun 08, 2018

Emmanuel Macron has called on other members of the G7 to stand up to Donald Trump's trade policies in the face of what he described as the threat of a new USA "hegemony".

President Donald Trump accused Canada of burning down the White House during the War of 1812, according to a new report. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider.

The summit on Friday and Saturday in Charlevoix, Quebec, will be the first chance that G7 leaders will have to confront Trump in person since he imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union last week.

Trump's advisers have signaled that he plans to stand his ground during the meetings in Canada, but he has publicly expressed much more interest in the meeting he will have with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore after he leaves Canada, making clear to advisers that he isn't looking forward to being lectured by leaders from Europe and Canada.

They also said they expected Trump to come under increasing pressure at home to reverse the tariffs, which they said would hurt USA interests. The EU trade surplus with the U.S.is $151 Billion, and Canada keeps our farmers and others out.

Trump bragged at a fundraising speech later that month that he made up facts in a meeting with Trudeau, claiming the USA runs a trade deficit with its biggest ally.

"Within the context of the rights that the existing accord gives us, we are answering", Guajardo said. "I believe in cooperation and multilateralism because I will resist hegemony with all my strength".

But in a nod to concerns raised by Trump a year ago, the joint statement also said "At the same time, that trade has not always worked to the benefit of everyone".

"Canada's position is and always has been that the trilateral approach is actually better for Canada, Mexico and the United States". With Trump, the danger with him is that he's so stupid that he doesn't know he's stupid.

His private meeting with Macron, he said, "will be an opportunity to talk about the relations between Canada and France that are going very well, but also to highlight the challenges that we are going to have around the G7 table, and to make sure we are aligned".

The meeting comes after a gathering of G-7 finance ministers concluded last week with a message of "concern and disappointment" to Trump from the other six countries. They're not admiring us. Trudeau told NBC: "The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable".

Trump raised the issue of US auto imports with Abe at a meeting in Washington and said he wanted more investment plants in the American industrial heartland of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

"It does not detract from the friendship we have for each other and the friendship between our two countries", he said.

"This upcoming summit won't be an easy one, and the leadership of the Canadian government is very much counted upon", Kimihiro Ishikane, Japan's ambassador to Canada, said in an interview.
