Kate Spade had anxiety and depression for years, her husband said.

"Bea - I have always loved you", the note allegedly read.

"She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last five years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety", Andy Spade said in a statement obtained by The New York Times.

Her daughter is only thirteen years old and just lost her mother.

"I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media", Spade said.

"For the past 10 months we had been living separately, but within a few blocks of each other", he said. "So, I really hope that the family can come together for her daughter because it just doesn't go away".

"But we certainly miss our bright, sunshiney little person", he tells the newspaper, adding that his daughter would have been gratified to know the discourse surrounding her death had potential to help someone else. "Kate loved Bea so very much".

Kate Spade was born Katherine Brosnahan and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.

Together, Andy and Kate founded the Kate Spade brand, which rose to prominence in the '90s with its vibrant line of handbags. The husband-and-wife duo parted ways with their successful company in 2007, after selling to Liz Claiborne Inc. She was 55 years old and had a 13-year-old daughter with husband Andy Spade, who called her death "a complete shock".

On behalf of the CFDA, CEO Steven Kolb and designer Diane von Furstenberg released a statement to say they felt "devastated".
