Mnuchin Tried To Convince Trump To Exempt Canada From Tariffs

"That is the best option we have today", Macron said during the joint press conference with Trudeau. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider.

Mr. Kudlow characterized Canada and Europe's angry reaction to the tariffs - including reciprocal tariffs on US goods that come into effect on July 1 - as a "family quarrel".

British Prime Minister Theresa May will not hold a formal bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit, but she will have meetings with each of the other leaders attending the summit, May's officials said on Thursday.

When Trudeau won power, the bedrock of his foreign policy was to return Canada to its traditional multilateral leanings - support for institutions such as the United Nations, NATO, the G7 and the global trading order.

Trump bragged at a fundraising speech later that month that he made up facts in a meeting with Trudeau, claiming the us runs a trade deficit with its biggest ally.

However, the French leader apparently did not also rule out amending the deal by what he called reaching a "broader agreement" with the Islamic Republic, which would particularly cover its activities in the region. "We will have to work all together on a broader agreement with Iran and [other] countries in the region, our allies", he said, apparently referring to the Gulf monarchies.

However, there are believed to be divisions over the scale of the fightback, with Germany said to be resisting demands in some quarters for a more punitive response.

"It's understandable that change causes friction", the official said, noting some of Trump's recent tariff announcements have brought stubborn trading partners back to the negotiating table. "But I'm not President Trump so I can't make decisions for him".

The meeting comes after a gathering of G-7 finance ministers concluded last week with a message of "concern and disappointment" to Trump from the other six countries.

One source with knowledge of the matter said that Italy wanted to "create as much space as possible to continue the dialogue with the U.S.", noting that new Italian Prime Minister Guiseppe Conte, a political novice, would be treading carefully in Canada because he "needs to see the dynamics of the group".

There was shock when the world's largest economy confirmed it was imposing the duties on the EU, Canada and Mexico from 1 June, as part of President Donald Trump's protectionist agenda aimed at saving USA jobs. They're not admiring us.

"It is laughable to say that Canada, France... can represent a threat to America's national security, as we are the best allies that the U.S. has had for a long time", Trudeau said. "In reality, we are the closest allies and friends that the United States has had for quite some time". The shortlist is created to add political pressure on US swing state districts with economies dependent on the export of goods to Canada.
