Glenn Beck reflects on Anthony Bourdain loss, America's search for answers

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recently found that suicide rates have jumped 25 percent in the U.S. since 1999. The movie star's death was initially ruled a suicide but later accounts have raised questions about that conclusion. "We need to intervene in both mental and public health cases", Dr Reed says.

What factors increase the risk of suicide?

"Those are a few things we might point to", she added. Middle-aged adults - ages 45 to 64 - had the largest rate increase, rising to 19.2 per 100,000 in 2016 from 13.2 per 100,000 in 1999.

"The reason most suicide decedents don't have a known mental disorder is that they were never diagnosed, not that they didn't have one", said Dr. David Brent, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. "Suicide is one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States right now, and it's one of three causes that is actually increasing recently, so we do consider it a public health problem - and something that is all around us", Schuchat said.

The findings were published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Firearm ownership is common, and Delaney said "the literature is getting pretty strong" that states with easier access to guns have higher suicide rates. In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the people had no known mental health condition when they ended their lives.

Whether or not they had a mental health condition, most people who died by suicide had experienced "one or more factors that may have contributed, including a relationship problem, a crisis in the recent couple weeks and problematic substance abuse", she said.

"None of this is surprising information, which is not to trivialize its importance".

Densely populated East Coast territories tended to have the lowest rates: Washington, D.C. had the lowest measured, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000, followed by New Jersey, New York, Massachussets, Maryland, Connecitcut, and California.

"People who attempt suicide are often acutely distressed or in crisis at that particular moment". However, teens who aren't likely to reach out could be internalizing what they see.

"Many of us have been personally impacted by this unfortunate reality", said Greg Lakin, the chief medical officer of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. And on Friday, "Kitchen Confidential" author Bourdain, 61, was found dead in his French hotel room, which CNN confirmed was also a suicide.

The increasing rate comes as no surprise to those who work to prevent suicide.

Only Nevada saw a decline, and that was just one percent. It's important to talk about this issue, and end the stigma. "It could be a debate about where can we find some common ground that doesn't simply involve only talking about people with mental illnesses, because as this paper shows, that's not going to get the job done".

"We have always felt suicide prevention is everyone's business", Allen said.

Are you thinking about dying?

There is a national campaign urging people to #Bethe1to help save a life by asking and listening whenever they notice warning signs in someone they know. "And there's good research to support that". A day after the report was published, celebrity chef and writer Anthony Bourdain also died by an apparent suicide. "There's a lot of factors that go into it but that's another big piece of that report that came out", said Heisig.

He points out, for example, that the nation now has no federally funded suicide prevention program for adults.
