Macron v. Trump: French President Threatens To Rebuke US At Summit

Howard TerryJun 09, 2018

President Donald Trump said Friday that Russian Federation should be reinstated to a leading group of industrialized nations ahead of his visit to the G7 summit this weekend.

Trump also called Trudeau out as indignant and sent out a message to French President Emmanuel Macron.

In today's postings, Trump says he is heading to Canada for G7 talks that will mostly centre on the longtime, unfair trade practices aimed at the United States.

Before jumping on Air Force One to fly to Canada, which is hosting the summit in La Malbaie north of Quebec City, Trump called for a return to the body's pre-2014 "G8" formula.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the summit host, and British Prime Minister Theresa May, who will also attend, are among those to sharply criticize the USA tariffs as unjustified and punitive.

Trump, meanwhile, is going in with all guns blazing. "And he's going to talk to them", Larry Kudlow, Trump's top economic adviser, told reporters in Washington. "Ongoing negotiations are a good sign and are certainly better than a tariff war".

USA policy still does not recognize Russia's referendum taking control of Crimea and continues to identify the territory as "a part of Ukraine".

The U.S. trade deficit, however, fell to a seven-month low in April as exports rose to a record high, the U.S. Commerce Department reported on Wednesday.

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries".

"Until we can have reciprocal relationships, we will not have free trade, and we will not have fair trade", Kudlow said.

Previous G7 summits have seen large-scale anti-globalisation protests, but Trump was a main target of the demonstration as masked anarchists set fire to USA flags and those of other G7 nations. In a statement at the time the countries, which include the U.S., France, Canada, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan, condemned Russia's actions as "illegal" and in "contravention of global law".

To add fuel to the fire, Trump reportedly asked Trudeau about Canada burning down the White House to justify his reasoning for viewing Canada as a security threat (for reference, that was the war of 1812, and it was British troops).

Trump joined the leaders of major industrialized nations in an idyllic Canadian resort town after days of escalating conflict over new US tariffs he slapped on imports of steel and aluminum. USA stocks were trading higher on Wednesday.

Friday morning he was spitting again: "Canada charges the US a 270% tariff on Dairy Products!"

Earlier this year, President Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement, which has sparked backlash among allies. If the administration treats allies as enemies it will turn European anger into rage. The European Union also attends.

The G7 Summit runs from 8 to 9 June in Charlevoix, Canada.

World leaders gather today in Quebec, Canada, for a G7 meeting that has been overshadowed by the United States decision to impose steel tariffs on allies.

"The president has inexplicably shown our adversaries the deference and esteem that should be reserved for our closest allies", Republican Senator John McCain said. The event brings together the world's foremost economic powerhouses, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
