United Nations chief: Oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050

While we really appreciate the steps undertaken by Pakistan Navy to reduce plastic pollution, other organisations and industries also need to join the effort to make our environment totally clean from such hazardous waste.

Implemented by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) with cooperation from all personnel under MoD, the initiative was launched by Minister of Development Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar.

- June 5 is World Environment Day, a day that represents the single largest celebration of our environment.

It's estimated that 1 billion tonnes of plastic have been discarded since the 1950s, and research suggests it will take up to 500 years for some forms to biodegrade.

The Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) has pledged to minimise single-use plastic by the sector to address the twin concerns of environment friendly waste management and conservation of conventional fuels. Common environmental issues include air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change.

In India, plastic has been found inside dead cows while a whale in Thailand died after consuming waste bags. By doing so, severe environmental consequences can be prevented and the natural habitat will be liberated from plastics.

She said scientists estimate there are more than 150 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean and if nothing changes, there will be more plastic than fish by 2050.

A pledge made by worldwide and local companies to tackle plastic waste is a "false solution" to a worsening problem, Greenpeace says. He praised India for its growing focus on environmental protection but also noted that while traveling in the country he'd seen "some of the most handsome scenic places, but destroyed by plastic pollution".

Greenpeace is calling on the New Zealand Government to enact a plastic pollution strategy, that starts with a comprehensive ban on plastic bags and moves into eliminating other avoidable single-use plastics, like straws, cutlery and stir sticks, and then set up nationwide container deposit scheme to ensure better collection with drink bottles. In 2008, Rwanda became one of the first African countries to impose a complete ban on thin plastic bags as part of its Vision 2020 plan for sustainability. Oxfam and its partners have mobilized students, in fabric bag distributions, plastic cleanup drives and tree plantations in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Lahore and Karachi to help mitigate plastic pollution in Pakistan. "In fact, micro plastics have now even entered basic food like salt, bottled water and tap water".
