The CDC report notes that half of the suicides reported were committed by individuals with no known mental health issues, but according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, one in four people will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime yet half never seek treatment.

CDC researchers examined state-level suicide rate trends between 1999 and 2016 in the "Vital Signs" report released Thursday afternoon, and also analyzed 2015 data covering 27 states from the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System to study the circumstances of suicide among people with and without known mental health conditions.

According to the study, the rate of suicide in the US rose almost 30 percent between 1999 and 2016.

Suicide is "a tragedy for families and communities across the country", Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, said in a statement.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

There were about 10 suicides per 100,000 people ages 10 and older in Maryland from 1999-2016, the CDC reported.

Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died. Data shows that high-profile suicides lead to a rise in copycat deaths. "She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives".

Say things like "I noticed you've been looking down, or I've noticed you've said things that seem like you're really not as motivated towards life", he said.

He thinks the general public commonly pictures someone who had been getting treatment for a long period before killing themselves, like fashion designer Kate Spade, who died this week, but that's often not the case.

"It's on all of us to take more responsibility for our own health and the health of our loved ones, both physical and emotional", Dvoskin says.

Access to guns can make it more likely that an impulsive or intoxicated person will attempt suicide even if he or she has no clear mental-health problem, Brent added.

The rise in substance use has been a factor, Tilley said.

Keltz admits the warning signs of someone thinking about committing suicide aren't always easy to see, varying person by person. IN was even higher, experiencing an increase of suicides from 31 to 37 percent.

In Hawaii, rates went up about 18-percent from 1999 to 2016.
