MACRON’S MUTINY: French President TURNS on TRUMP Ahead of G7 Summit

Eileen GuzmanJun 10, 2018

During a brief meeting with reporters at the Quebec resort where the leaders gathered, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - who had been at each other's throats for a week - even shared a few jokes.

May has criticised the tariffs and also opposes Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the group of leading industrialised nations.

Why are we having a meeting without them?

But Sasse said Trump's complaints that other countries have taken advantage of the United States are unfounded, adding that he recommended "less whining on the global stage".

Talk at the two-day summit has been dominated by discussion of Trump's move to impose punitive tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union - a move French President Emmanual Macron has called "illegal and a mistake" under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

The tit-for-tat dispute over USA metals tariffs followed more than a year of tense and so far unsuccessful negotiations to renew NAFTA and a long and failed charm offensive by Trudeau and top Canadian officials to avoid Trump's trade ire.

Trudeau says the U.S., Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan figured out "consensus language" they could all agree to.

"I would say that the G8 is a more meaningful group than the G7, absolutely", Trump said.

He then held on to Trump, and pulled his hand towards him, forcing the U.S President, who is 30 years his senior, to break it off.

Merkel said there was a broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced.

Trump's strained relationship with the rest of the G7 was evident on Saturday when he arrived late for the opening session, with Trudeau addressing a gathering that included an empty chair where the president was meant to be.

On Friday, he and Mr. Trump had a one-on-one meeting.

Before departing the summit, Trump doubled-down on his assertions that the U.S. has been subjected to unfair trade duties for many years. "And it doesn't help US citizens understand the disruption in our economy that is actually coming from more technology and more automation, not from free trade agreements - which have overwhelmingly benefited American families".

French President Emmanuel Macron responded in a "courteous but very firm tone" to present the European side of the story, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe chimed in as well, the official said.

Trump showed up late and will leave early on Saturday, heading to Singapore for his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump said at the White House just before departing. He said other world leaders reacted positively to the idea.

Tweeted Trump in a series of tweets starting last night: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers". Trump has denied the hotel, which opened during the Klondike Gold Rush, was ever operated as a brothel. The noise of Trump's helicopter landing was so loud they had to stop talking for a while, in a scene one official compared to the opening from the USA television series M.A.S.H.
