Trump, Trudeau swap jokes but hold firm in trade dispute

"I don't know if there was surprise with president Trump's free trade proclamation but they certainly listened to it and we had lengthy discussions about that", Trump's economic advisor Larry Kudlow said.

Mr. Trump said on Saturday that he had told the G7 leaders that the US required fair access to markets and an end to unfair trade practices. Canada, Mexico and the European Union all threatened retaliatory tariffs after their exemption status was lifted. "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", he said.

"We will continue to demonstrate that we're interested in defending Canadian interests and, on top of that, it turns out I'm defending American interests because these tariffs they're putting forward are going to hurt American workers as well", Trudeau said Thursday. "When we can underscore this, and we see that there's a lot of pressure within the USA, perhaps he will revise his position". We have a world to run.

United States President Donald Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the Group of Eight industrial nations has been rejected.

Trump left the meeting early to fly to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, describing it as a "mission of peace".

However, the President of the European Council on Friday rejected a call by Trump and Conte on the first day of the annual summit.

Trump arrived late for Saturday's meeting during the Group of Seven summit of leading industrialized nations being held in Quebec.

Anger over Trump's trade policies will occupy center stage at Friday's G7 meeting of the world's most advanced economies.

USA stock indexes initially dipped on Friday, partly due to investor nervousness over the G7 summit, but later turned positive.

Just before taking off from Charlevoix, Que., Trump called the Group of Seven summit "really tremendously successful" before launching into a tirade about how unfairly he believes the countries in the group have been treating the US, while complimenting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and taking a shot at a reporter from "fake news CNN" in the process.

Macron has made clear if talks don't lead to compromise, the other six leaders would be willing to sign a joint communique by the end of the summit without the U.S. But the president's focus may be divided.

Trump says they will either have a better agreement on NAFTA or two deals involving separate trade deals with Canada and Mexico.

Donald Trump said "we can't do that anymore" and said it was time for the United States to be treated better by the EU, Canada and other trading partners not represented at the summit.

While the G7 chiefs have largely praised Trump for his efforts to stabilise the Korean peninsula, they are unhappy he pulled out of an global agreement created to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions.

When a CNN reporter asked Trump about anger and frustration from United States allies over trade, he lambasted the reporter and his "fake friends at CNN".

The Trump administration's claims that its trade is tied to national security is less of a hard fact than a political argument. "I might have had a very different" response, Trump said.

Trudeau has made the issue of gender equality a priority for the gathering.

He said: "The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades and we can't do that anymore".
