F1: Vettel, Ferrari roll to victory in Canada

Grant SmithJun 12, 2018

It was the Italian team's first Canadian GP win since Michael Schumacher in 2004, a race Vettel watched on television as a teenager at home in Germany.

The top three kept their positions from the start, with Vettel leading from pole position ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. "On my steering wheel they have the lap count and it showed one more lap to go". With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's vehicle this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to auto issues at the start of the session.

Bottas' second also sees him jump back above Ricciardo into third in the standings, albeit 35 and 37 points behind respectively. I don't think anyone wants to be cheated of that.

Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas tailed Vettel the entire way after fighting off Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen off the start, but Bottas never got almost close enough to mount a challenge, though he did come home a solid second.

"I was just really happy to finish", said Hamilton. "I'm sure in the next couple of days it will get more and more painful". "He just ran me out of road", said the luckless Hartley.

The race began in near-perfect conditions with an air temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and the track at 45 as the lights went out.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who dominated much of practice, turned in a mature, error-free effort to take third place and quiet the storm of criticism swirling around him following a string of errors and crashes.

Mercedes came to Montreal intending to introduce a new upgraded engine, but chose to postpone it due to reliability concerns while both Ferrari and Red Bull raced with theirs.

"I think we've got potential in this vehicle and when you guys are writing your stories, I think previous year there was "oh, Mercedes have the best car" and all those different things, but ultimately I think we did the better job", he added.

"Their vehicle is fantastic and the engine, too".

Frenchman Esteban Ocon was ninth for Force India with Monaco's Charles Leclerc taking the final point for Sauber.

The Safety Car was deployed in order to clear the wreckage while stewards opted to take no further action against either driver. The two ran side-by-side on the run up to the second chicane, but Stroll broke loose and, upon correcting his FW41 chassis, drifted right into Hartley.

This year marks the 55th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Parc Jean-Drapeau.

Fernando Alonso would have hoped to make Q3 in his 300th Grand Prix weekend, but he had to settle for P14 after finishing Q2 more than a second off the pace.
