Trump to Macron: EU Worse Than China on Trade

Howard TerryJun 12, 2018

Before traveling to Singapore for what's nearly sure to be a tense, high-stakes summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump first travels to Canada Friday to attend what's shaping up to be a hard G7 summit amid tensions over tariffs with American allies. "And that's the key point", Trump said.

In it, Merkel, with other world leaders standing around her, stares coldly down at a seated Trump, who has his arms crossed in apparent defiance.

French President Emmanuel Macron turned on President Trump Thursday, slamming the American leader over potential trade tariffs and his position on climate change; warning Trump the G7 could quickly become the G6.

Aides to the president insist that the president is looking forward to the trip.

The White House subsequently announced the president would leave on Saturday, before the summit formally ends, to fly to Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. In one photo, Xi and Russia's Vladimir Putin, with smiles on their faces, lead other world leaders to stride into a dining hall.

And at the same time as western nations are at loggerheads, the USA president seems more at home with autocrats than with Washington's traditional allies.

However, as Politico noted, Macron's statement never explicitly mentioned Trump's name. But Trump emerged from the White House South Portico 30 minutes late on Friday morning, and spent another 20 minutes talking to reporters.

He went on to announce that the U.S. would be looking to impose tariffs on vehicle imports.

Talks with Trump are like sausages, says French President Macron: Report

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said that Trump's determination to bait his allies over trade and diplomatic engagements "would only play into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

By the time Trump did arrive in Canada, met by a cordon of red-jacketed Mounties, he was well behind schedule, making the meeting impossible.

He told reporters the United States' attitude must lead other nations to "reforge the European front".

"This should not come as a surprise to anyone", said Colin Robertson, vice president at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and a former Canadian diplomat, but "I wouldn't say the walls have come down we don't have a communique".

Back in Europe, the magazine for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, one of the largest daily newspapers in Germany, had a different view: that of an exasperated mother speaking to her insolent son. Merkel thinks that it is better to set out those differences instead of giving a false impression of unity with a dishonest communique that would say everything's OK.

But Wright added: "There is a feeling, I think, over the last few months, that that approach has not borne fruit, and that they haven't really gotten anything for that friendly approach".

"Any conversations about whether or not Russian Federation can come back round the table cannot take place until Russian Federation has changed its attitude".
