Canada looks to ride out Trump trade storm

President Trump may be fresh off a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, but he's still smarting from a perceived slight from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"My mission was to send a very strong signal of strength. the problem was that in conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate", Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal CFO Network conference in Washington.

Trudeau had said using national security as a justification for tariffs was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their United States allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

Donald Trump's heightened attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are raising concerns that he might follow through on threats to impose auto tariffs, a move that could devastate the vehicle industry in Canada and lead to higher USA prices.

Freeland said Tuesday that Trudeau had raised the auto issue in his bilateral meeting with Trump on Friday at the G7 summit.

The United States imposed new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum less than two weeks ago on a "national security" basis. He called on Trudeau to apologise to Trump. Kudlow told Tapper that Trudeau "did a great disservice" to the G7, and said that Trudeau had attacked Trump for "domestic consumption".

On Sunday, Navarro, who is Trump's most hawkish trade adviser, assailed Trudeau for engaging in "bad faith diplomacy" in the wake of the G-7 meeting. "He learned", Trump said wagging his finger. And I say, push him around?

"Trump's disruptiveness is one thing, but his treatment of Canada and other USA allies is unprecedented", said Roland Paris, a University of Ottawa professor and former Trudeau foreign policy adviser.

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

Trump said it "didn't look friendly" but it was "very friendly". But he also said that critical comments from Justin Trudeau would cost Canada "a lot of money". He learned. You can't do that.

Showing support for industry amid the turmoil, Trudeau met Tuesday with a group of farmers in Ottawa who benefit from the supply management system that has drawn the ire of Trump. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

Trump embarked on a post-G7 Twitter tirade on the weekend against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him "dishonest" and "weak" in the escalating battle over trade tariffs.

"From the beginning we have said that our approach would be to work for the best possible outcome but to always be prepared for the worst, to have backup plans", she said. The Trudeau government has announced it will impose dollar-for-dollar, retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other USA products by July 1.

"Sometimes when we think about tariffs, when we think about a trade war, we lose sight of the real impact, and that's on workers", Singh told a news conference.
