Extras on Trump-Kim summit handed out in Tokyo

President Donald Trump today said the USA will stop conducting military drills on the Korean peninsula, after his historic summit here with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Following the unprecedented meeting in Singapore, Trump stunned observers when he said continuing the exercises routinely held between the US and South Korea would be "inappropriate" while Washington fleshes out a comprehensive deal with Pyongyang.

What alarmed them more was Trump's throwaway promise to end "war games" with South Korea, which he described as "very expensive" and "very provocative".

"We're spending a fortune, every couple of months we're doing war games with South Korea", he added.

Now, Trump lies a lot.

"Conversations have been robust, there were no surprises".

Meanwhile, China, the main economic lifeline for the North, said that the diplomatic steps should be rewarded and suggested that the United Nations should ease the sanctions. That would have put us in a precarious position because it would have paved the legal pathway for the removal of USA troops from South Korea.

U.S. forces in Korea said they had not received updated guidance on military exercises.

He continued: "So we're not going to be doing, as long as we're negotiating in good faith". The four-point plan included "new U.S. -DPRK relations" as well as the North committing to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". "For a guy who has heavily criticized the Iran deal and previous agreements with North Korea, Trump's big achievement amounts to much less than those previous agreements". "I want our government to use this opportunity effectively and set up a concrete schedule for the (abductees') return as soon as possible", said Iizuka, 80, whose younger sister, Yaeko Taguchi, was kidnapped by North Korean agents in 1978 when she was 22 years old. "That's not part of the equation right now".

"The greatest achievement of the summit was that Trump's comments show his confidence in resolving any issues [with Kim]", Nam said in a brief meeting with a small group of reporters in Singapore.

Mattis has repeatedly stressed that any reduction in troops would be a decision that only Washington and Seoul could address.

"We can see the summit as the first step in that process", Ross said, "even if he didn't mean it". In its statement on the Singapore summit provided to The Daily Beast, the Department of Defense sidestepped the question, claiming us "alliances remain ironclad, and ensure peace and stability in the region".

So how in the world is it plausible that Trump is looking to save money by cutting military exercises?

"To give Kim Jong-un some assurance that we're willing to meet him more than halfway".

"But we believe it is necessary to come up with various measures to improve dialogue more smoothly", the Blue House said.

China, North Korea's main ally, accounts for more than 90 percent of the isolated country's trade, and China's participation is widely seen as crucial for worldwide sanctions to have any bite.

Vice President Mike Pence allegedly assured some GOP senators Tuesday morning that USA military exercises in South Korea would continue.

In a blockbusting press conference after the summit, Trump said the USA would halt military exercises with Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion.

"The Singapore summit statement is essentially aspirational: no definitions of denuclearisation, no timelines, no details as to verification", Haass said on Twitter.

"We actually have a new deal with South Korea in terms of the trade deal but we have to talk to many countries about trading us fairly".
